Victoria artist Deryk Houston, the directors of the http://www.facebook.com/l/64c2d;johnsonstreetbridge.org, and our friends and supporters are holding

A VISUAL ART EVENT ON THE JOHNSON STREET BRIDGE

to celebrate the bridge’s heritage, and raise public awareness about flaws in the City of Victoria’s $63-million scheme to replace it.

Where: Reeson Park, at the corner of Wharf and Johnson streets

When: Sunday, September 20th, 2009
information booth from 11 am to 1 pm
12 noon walk to the bridge

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. We will need at least 25 people to make the event work, but the more the merrier! Please RSVP to info@http://www.facebook.com/l/64c2d;johnsonstreetbridge.org so we know how many people to expect.

The event will happen rain or shine, so keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared. If you know photographers or kayakers, please ask them to be at the bridge before noon. Dress colourfully! Also, please bring red lipstick, if you have it! (We’ll explain why on Sunday.)

Deryk Houston (http://www.facebook.com/l/64c2d;www.derykhouston.com) is an internationally respected artist, and he approached us with the idea of creating a fun, vibrant event. This is not a “demonstration” or a “protest”, it’s an opportunity to create and record something visually interesting on the bridge, before it’s surrounded by construction – whether that is to repair it, or replace it.

Deryk has created sculptural installations in Iraq, Canada, and Scotland, in support of children’s rights. His work is featured in the 2003 documentary “From Baghdad to Peace Country,” produced by the National Film Board of Canada.

http://www.facebook.com/l/64c2d;Johnsonstreetbridge.org has obtained all necessary permits for this event from the City of Victoria, the Victoria Police Department, and the Provincial Capital Commission.
