J.J. Cale coming to Victoria

February 28, 2009 at 11:20 am (jazz, music, performance) ()

While not yet confirmed on the Alix Goolden Hall website, it appears that J.J. Cale will perform at that venue on April 11, according to Jazz News (“JJ CALE CONFIRMS FIRST SOLO TOUR IN FIVE YEARS IN SUPPORT OF “SUPREMELY CHILL, UTTERLY AGELESS” (ROLLING STONE) NEW ALBUM ROLL ON (ROUNDER RECORDS)”):

JJ Cale has confirmed his first tour in five years, returning to the road with a few weeks of solo shows in intimate west coast venues. The tour is in support of his sublime Rounder Records

debut Roll On, with a portion of the proceeds from each show to be donated to animal shelters and rescue efforts in each city. The album, out February 24, is getting rave reviews, and the title track featuring Eric Clapton on guitar was the #1 Most Added song at AAA radio in its first week.

“The songs are top-shelf… his bubbling guitar – as much a jam band archetype as Jerry Garcia’s – glints across the shadows.” –Rolling Stone

Roll On [is] a showcase for Mr. Cale’s laidback shuffle.” –The Wall Street Journal

Roll On finds Cale back in vintage form. You can practically feel the tour bus hitting the open road in the title track.” –The Boston Globe

Gail Harris and the Lowriders

February 25, 2009 at 4:56 pm (music, performance) (, )

Next weekend at Hermann’s:

At 8 pm on Friday, March 6th, Gail Harris & The Low Riders
will again bring their “serio comic cow funk groovin poet
posse” to Hermann’s Jazz Club.

Featuring Victoria performance artist Gail Harris’s (Film:
Men: A Passion Playground, 1986, Atom Egoyan) original
tunes, vocals and guitar licks, Hon Chow’s drum sculpting,
“Alley Zed” on percussion and funky vocals, and Sooke’s Gord
Phillips on bass, guitar and back up vocals, this band of
rabble rousers serve up a mix of invigorating, serio comic
original tunes and stratosphere-altering poetry/music
electro acoustic symph-operas that transport the audience to
the coffee houses of the psychedelic 60’s!

Joining The Low Riders will be special guests “Caroline &
Adam Awesome Band, Great Job!” featuring amazing vocalist
Caroline Spence (Crimson Star) and jazz wizard Adam
Basterfield (Crimson Star, PIGS Pink Floyd Tribute Band) in
their Victoria debut as a duo.

So as Edna Boyle would say, “Come on Down”! As Hermann’s is
a restaurant offering a fine selection of fare, children are
most welcome too!  Hope to see you there!

$8 in advance (Lyle’s / Alloy Music) $10 at the door.
